DIY Montessori number rods. The number rods are among the first materials that are presented to the child for learning arithmetic. In the number rods, the multiple lengths of ten centimeters are distinguished by the alternating sequence of two different colors.

How to build the Montessori number rods
Required materials
– Ten wooden rods, which vary in length from 1 decimeter, to 1 meter (2.5 × 2.5 cm section of the rods).
– Every decimeter is alternately colored red and blue. Thus, the first rod is completely red, the second, two decimeters long, will be red and blue, and so on.
– Each rod must always have the first red line (then the third will be red-blue-red).
Build number rods is extremely easy. I did the following: I cut the pieces of wood into ten pieces: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 and 100 cm. I then divided with the rule into lengths of 10 cm and I started to color the red lines:
then I put the adhesive tape, to avoid soiling the red lines, and to obtain accurate boundary lines:
and then I switched to the blue…
A similar material, but that is not marked by two distinct colors, but where all the rods are of the same color (red), is used for a long by children at an earlier time, when performing exercises for the education of the senses (the visual sense to the quantities).
These are the Montessori red rods with which the children get used to distinguish at first glance the different lengths, placing them side by side and making sure as the length increases evenly.
Children who engage in this kind of sensory exercises have 3 years of age, as they begin to use the number rods about 4 and a half years, when they already know write or at least already know the letters and make words.
