Montessori fraction skittles – Presentation
Necessary material:
– the fraction skittles
– a tray.
Presentation:
1. The teacher asks the child to join her in the exercise, then carries the tray with the material at the table, and sits beside the child, to his non-dominant side.
2. She then begins to move the various parts of the skittles from the tray to the table, naming them. The skittles must be taken as it normally takes a bottle: with the dominant hand on the neck, and the other to act as a support below:
– The first skittle is the “whole”
– Every part of the second skittle is “1 means”
– Every part of the third skittle is “one third”
– Every part of the fourth skittle is “one quarter”.
3. When she took over single fractions of a skittle, skittle is rebuilt piece by piece on the table. For example, if you take one half, you say his name, then you offer it in the hands of the child so that he can examine it. The child returns the skittle to the teacher and she puts it on the table. Then the teacher takes the other half, moving in the same way, and puts it next to the first half, to reconstitute on the table the whole, so that the child can always see the pieces back together.
4. At the end the teacher puts everything on the tray and leaves the child free to explore the material, also trying to mix the parts together.
