Science experiments for children – Sugar crystals – an experiment for children of kindergarten and primary school.
What do you need?
a wooden skewer,
a clothespin,
a glass jar high and narrow,
boiling water,
sugar,
food coloring (optional).
Come si fa
Put on the fire a pot of water and bring to boil.
Leaving the pot on the heat, add the sugar, a tablespoon at a time, and mix until it is entirely dissolved.
Continue adding until you notice that the solution is saturated (the sugar will not be able to melt). Then cool down for about half an hour. If necessary, add colorants.
Pour the solution into the jar until it is filled almost completely, then dip the stick (attached at the top to the clothespin), making sure that it stays suspended in the jar without touching the sides or the bottom.
Put the jar in a place where it is easy to observe the growth of the crystal without touching or moving or never shake the jar. The crystals are formed in about a week.

What happens?
By dissolving sugar in boiling water we obtain a saturated solution which can contain much more sugar than could happen with the cold water.
When the solution cools, therefore, the sugar molecules come out of solution, and they are deposited in the form of crystal on the wooden skewer.
